Many popular mobile apps use cards, small content containers, as their dominant design paradigm. Now some within the mobile development industry are calling for open card standards. They say that standardization will enable interoperability, make it easier to distribute content and marketing materials, and improve search and personalization capabilities.

Futurist, investor and Bottlenose CEO Nova Spivack writes, “The headache of supporting multiple different competing card formats will become painful enough that someone will solve it with a standard. Whoever does this first will have valuable first-mover advantages.”

Spivak says that Twitter, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple are all well-positioned to create a new card standard and adds, “Instead of wasting a decade or more of time and money and causing everyone in the ecosystem unnecessary friction as they figure this out for themselves, the large incumbents could save everyone a lot of trouble and move the future closer by launching an open standard for cards.”
