Documentary Highlights Lack of Women Coders

  • By Developer.com Staff

Over the weekend, a documentary called "Code: Debugging the Gender Gap" debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. It chronicles the sharp drop in female computer science graduates: while 37 percent of U.S. computer science majors were women in 1985, less than half as many women study computer science today.

Filmmaker Robin Hauser Reynolds says this is the first feature film on the subject of women developers. "We talk about how this is a Rosie the Riveter moment and an economic issue [that there are increasingly more technical jobs than technically trained people], so this is not a whiney female film," said Reynolds. "I’m not some raging feminist. I believe in feminism, I believe in equality. But it’s more about 'Hey, we all need to pay attention to this.'"
