The Docker containerization tool is changing up its release cycle and adding a new edition. The tool now comes in either an Enterprise Edition (EE), which comes with support, and a Community Edition (CE), which is open source. In addition, the CE version is splitting into two separate tracks: an Edge release that will be updated once per month and a more stable quarterly release. The EE version will also get quarterly updates. The idea between the two different release cycles is that developers who want the newest features can get the Edge version and operations folks who need stability can use the quarterly CE version or EE.

Making things a little more complicated, Docker EE will also come in a few different flavors. EE Basic will offer core container-as-a-service functionality. EE Standard will add the capabilities of Docker Datacenter, and EE Advanced will have “image security scanning and continuous vulnerability monitoring.”
