A new survey conducted by HackerRank finds some interesting discrepancies among the languages developers know and the languages they prefer. Respondents gave identical answers to questions about which languages are in demand with employers and which languages they know: JavaScript, Java, Python, C++ and C, in that order.

However, when asked which language they would prefer to use, Python was number one. And when asked which language they wanted to learn next, developers chose Go, Python, Scala, Kotlin and Ruby, in that order.

On average developers know four languages and want to know four more.
