AWS Launches Cloud Computing Service for Satellites

  • By Developer.com Staff

Amazon is going beyond the cloud — literally. At the Amazon Web Services (AWS) re:Invent conference, the cloud computing providing unveiled AWS Ground Station, a new cloud service aimed at companies that own satellites. Amazon has installed ground antennas at its data centers around the world, which can now retrieve satellite data from space so that owners can process it in Amazon's cloud.

According to AWS CEO Andy Jassy, customers requested the service. “Customers said that we have so much data in space with so many applications that want to use that data. Why don’t you make it easier,” he said.

Without AWS Ground Station, satellite owners would need to buy land and build their own ground stations. Amazon claims its service can save them up to 80 percent.
