Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that it is joining the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a Platinum member. Operated by The Linux Foundation, the CNCF is leading development of the Kubernetes open source container orchestration platform, as well as several other projects. All of the other leading public cloud computing vendors — Microsoft, IBM and Google — are also members of the CNCF, and other members of the foundation include AT&T, Cisco, the Cloud Foundry Foundation, CoreOS, Docker, eBay, Joyent, Red Hat, Twitter and VMware.

Amazon’s decision to join the CNCF is somewhat surprising given that its EC2 Container Service does not use Kubernetes technology. Some industry analysts wonder whether the cloud computing giant will launch a Kubernetes-related service as a result of its new involvement with the CNCF.
