A new report from ABI Research reveals that the size of the average iOS app increased 16 percent between April and September, and now hovers around 23 MB. During the same time period, the size of the average game increased 42 percent to reach 60 MB. The firm says that the mobile development industry is taking advantage of Apple’s increased over-the-air download limit and that the new retina display caused the size of the apps to climb upwards.

ABI’s press release noted, “The flipside of the increasing file-sizes is that the internal storage of smartphones and tablets is becoming a scarcer resource, as the device capabilities struggle to keep up with the requirements of apps and mobile content.” Senior analyst Aapo Markkanen predicted, “Especially the consumers with 16GB devices are likely to become more conscious about what apps to keep and what to uninstall, so the developers’ bar to impress will be getting even higher than it is now. This could also speed up the adoption of the mobile cloud as a storage remedy quite significantly.”
