Late yesterday, the folks at Diaspora did what they said they were going to do – they released the source code for their open source social networking platform.

The code is available on GitHub under the GNU Affero General Public License.

This is a developer release, which means it’s for developers so they can make it better.

“DISCLAIMER: THIS IS PRE-ALPHA SOFTWARE AND SHOULD BE TREATED ACCORDINGLY. These instructions are for machines running Ubuntu, Fedora or Mac OS X. We are developing Diaspora for the latest and greatest browsers, so please update your Firefox, Chrome or Safari to the latest and greatest,” according to the project’s README.

“This is now a community project and development is open to anyone with the technical expertise who shares the vision of a social network that puts users in control,” the announcement said.
