Google Tosses Wave Over the Open Source Fence

In August, Google kicked the door shut on its online collaboration service, Wave. But yesterday, Google said they would lob the Wave source code over to the open source community.

On Monday, the software giant said that Wave would continue to operate as it has been until the end of the year. Between now and that time, Google is expected to release an open sourced scaled down version of its Wave codebase called "Wave in a Box."

According to the Register's Kelly Fiveash, Google software engineer Alex North said, "This project will not have the full functionality of Google Wave as you know it today. However, we intend to give developers and enterprising users an opportunity to run wave servers and host waves on their own hardware."
