Microsoft Says ‘We Love Open Source’

Microsoft’s relationship with the open source community has come a long way since CEO Steve Balmer called Linux a “cancer” in 2001. In a NetworkWorld interview, a Microsoft executive said, “We love open source.”

Jean Paoli is the general manager of Microsoft’s interoperability strategy team. He said that Microsoft’s mistake was equating all open source technology with Linux.

Does that mean Microsoft still hates Linux, but they’re cool with open source?

Well, the Redmond-based software giant is now making key contributions to open to the Linux kernel in terms of drivers, as well as other open source initiatives.
