This week, open source company Irontec launched the PHP for Android project.

The goal is to bring PHP development to Google’s Android mobile operating system.

“It is about helping PHP developers to get into the Android world for the first time without requiring to have a Java background,” Irontec Software Engineer Ivan Mosquera told PHPClasses.org.

PHP for Android leverages the Scripting Layer for Android (SLV4), which needs to be installed on the phone in order to run PHP applications.

The project is in its infancy, but there is an APK version 0.1 release available for download. The source code is available too.
