Android 3.0 Gingerbread for Tablets

  • By Developer.com Staff

Rumors are spreading about Google's next version of their open source Android operating system codenamed Gingerbread.

Engadget's Chris Ziegler reported yesterday that Eldar Murtazin has "spilled a few details on what he knows of the release on a Russian podcast."

Apparently, Gingerbread is going to support 1280 x 760 resolution for devices with screens larger than 4 inches. This paves the way for tablet manufacturers to embrace Android, which Cisco is doing with the Cius tablet.

The theory is that lower-end devices will continue running Android 2.1 and 2.2, because Google is expected to require much beefier hardware to run Android 3.0.

As Ziegler notes, this sounds like a recipe for platform fragmentation.

He also reported that Android 3.0 devices should be hitting the shelves around October - just in time for the holiday season.
