The makers of BitTorrent have decided to open source their uTorrent Transport Protocol under an MIT license.

uTP is used in the popular uTorrent BitTorrent client. It’s designed to reduce network traffic by throttling up and down based on network congestion levels.

But while uTP’s congestion control features can benefit users and help alleviate the tensions between ISPs and P2P users over bandwidth usage, developers haven’t been jump out their chairs to build applications around the protocol.

Maybe it just needed to be open sourced.

Ars Technica’s Ryan Paul said, “The availability of the source code under a permissive open source software license will now make it easier for application developers to support the protocol in their own applications. It will also open the door for application developers to help identify and fix problems in the implementation, leading to a stronger collective understanding of best practices for uTP adoption.”
