The seventh platform release of Android, version 2.2, has arrived and it includes several performance improvements and features geared to position open source Android for the enterprise.

Google Android SDK Tech Lead Xavier Durochet, in a blog post, highlighted Android 2.2 developments.

In terms of performance and speed, he said, “The new Dalvik JIT compiler in Android 2.2 delivers between a 2-5X performance improvement in CPU-bound code vs. Android 2.1 according to various benchmarks.”

For the enterprise, Android 2.2 now supports Microsoft’s Exchange capabilities such as account auto-discovery and calendar sync.

Also for the enterprise, developers can use the device policy management API to control security features of the device such as the remote wipe, minimum password and lock screen timeout.

There are also new data backup APIs to enable applications to participate in data backup and restore, allowing an application’s last data to be restored when installed on a new or a reset device.

Android Cloud to Device Messaging is now available to enable mobile alert, send to phone and to two-way push sync functionality.

Developers can download the Android 2.2 SDK and Android NDK here.
