Cisco Confirms Open Source Telepresence Coming This Summer

ZDNet columnist Dana Blankenhorn said today that Cisco has confirmed that it will open source its Telepresence video conferencing technology.

"Divesting ownership of the Telepresence Interoperability Protocol, which links Cisco Telepresence to other companies' videoconferencing systems," Blankenhorn explained, "was a condition of its $3.3 billion acquisition of Tandberg, the Norwegian videoconferencing company."

The teleconferencing interoperability protocol will be released under the Apache license on July 1 at SourceForge, Blankenhorn said.

The veteran technology journalist wrote that Cisco's move is not just a European Union requirement, but it makes good business sense too.

"The high end of the videoconferencing market now has to go down-market, or lose-out to investments in lower-quality gear," he wrote, "with all its compromises. So Cisco's move to an open source TIP makes great business sense."
