Ingres and Open Source Community Not Impressed with Oracle's MySQL Strategy

  • By Developer.com Staff

Oracle announced today version 7.1 of its MySQL Cluster technology claiming that this proves that the software giant is committed to MySQL development, but not everyone is buying it.

Responding to Oracle's announcement at the O'Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo, Ingres Chief Executive Roger Burkhardt said, "Oracle has already cut back the MySQL road map to avoid competing with its own database management system."

According to a report by Network World's Alan Shimel, Burkhardt said, "MySQL lacks the enterprise-grade strength and features required to actually run Oracle's own applications in production and it won't add these capabilities."

The Wall Street Journal reported that the "announcements fell short of a formal roadmap for the future of MySQL, says Noel Yuhanna, an analyst at Forrester Research. But 'Oracle is definitely putting weight behind it,' he says."
