In 2007, Florida State University signed on to contribute to the open source Kuali Foundation, but budget cuts have forced the university to prematurely pull out.

In an announcement Friday, Florida State said that "massive funding cuts" have forced the university to focus on "sustaining the operational base of the university's information systems."

Florida State joined with several other universities to invest at least $1 million a year to the Kuali Foundation to develop the open source Kuali Student System for managing student admission, registration and other tasks, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

"The financial capacity to continue contributing to Kuali Student has vanished. Regrettably, we have no alternative but to withdraw our participation in the KS initiative, effective June 2010," the press release said.
