Apple has given the mobile development industry an early Christmas gift in the form of a new pre-order feature in the App Store. In the latest version of the App Store, developers have the option of making new iOS apps or app updates available for pre-order. Setting up pre-orders also makes the app product page visible, giving developers time to market their apps before release.

Pre-orders are available for both free and paid apps. The pre-order price can’t be higher than the app price after release (if it is, Apple will give customers a refund), and pre-orders must begin between 2 and 90 days before the release of the app.

Apple tested pre-orders earlier this year with Super Mario Run.
