For developers who are just starting their careers, submitting a first pull request to a project hosted on GitHub can feel very intimidating. After all, you’re basically telling another developer that he or she made a coding mistake and that you know how to fix it.

ReadWrite’s Lauren Orsini offers several etiquette suggestions for newbie developers submitting their first pull requests. They include the following:

  • Be clear and specific.
  • Keep changes small. (Fix one bug at a time.)
  • Stick to existing conventions.
  • Never copy-and-paste code.
  • Don’t be rude.
