Red Hat Enterprise Linux: Your Solaris Alternative

In the past, many IT professionals chose the Sun SPARC platform for its powerful hardware and robust Solaris operating system. Since then, industry standard x86_64 servers have evolved to the point where they can now offer equal or better price, performance and reliability. That, in addition to Sun's uncertain future, and the benefits of an open, industry-standard architecture, make Red Hat Enterprise Linux a sensible alternative to Solaris.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Solaris are both robust, enterprise-class operating systems. Red Hat Enterprise Linux, however, offers several advantages. Red Hat partners with Intel, AMD, HP, IBM, Dell, Sun, and others to ensure that Red Hat Linux can deploy across a wide range of servers. This is all the more important when you consider the precarious position of Sun's SPARC platform.

Migrating from a legacy SPARC/Solaris platform to an x86 platform with Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides a significant savings in total cost of ownership (TCO). In contrast, switching to a Windows server environment is prohibitively expensive when you consider the cost of integrating Windows with existing UNIX infrastructure and acquiring the necessary skills. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription is also less expensive than the Solaris x86 subscription when you compare features.
