“The awards presented to these deserving companies at LinuxWorld honor not only the dedication and passion of some very talented people, but also pay tribute to the tangible advancement of Open Source technology,” said Charlie Greco, president and CEO, IDG World Expo. “As the cornerstone event for the Open Source community, LinuxWorld offers the perfect opportunity for these companies and individuals to share their innovations and continued success with their peers.”

On January 30th the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was awarded the IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award, following the opening keynote presentation by Carly Fiorina, chairman and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Co. The award recognizes EFF’s exceptional commitment to Open Source, and contributes $25,000 to the Foundation to support its efforts.

“EFF has tried to educate the open source community about the free speech implications of their work and the threats to that work through bad intellectual property laws,” said EFF Executive Director Shari Steele. “We have fought to protect open source in the courts. We are honored to be recognized for our hard work by this prestigious award.”

Also at LinuxWorld this week, the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) presented its Enterprise Achievement Award to Andrew James Tridgell, an Australian software developer and the creator of Samba. The OSDL awarded the $25,000 cash prize to Tridgell in recognition of his work on Samba, the widely deployed SMB file and print server for Unix and Unix-like systems. Tim Witham, OSDL lab director, presented the award to Tridgell following the keynote presentation by IBM’s William Zeitler on January 30th.

“This is a classic example of how a developer can start something on his or her own time, and wind up making computing better for everyone,” said Witham.

The next LinuxWorld Conference and Expo will take place at San Francisco’s Moscone Center, August 12-15, 2002.
