Borland Software Corporation announced the launch of Borland Together Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, the first independent, integrated design, modeling and code environment for the Microsoft .NET Framework to simultaneously connect enterprise architects and developers through Borland Together pioneered Borland LiveSource technology. After over a year of research and development effort, this new environment, written in native C#, is designed to assist organizations in the adoption of Microsoft® .NET Framework technologies and marks the latest advancement of the Borland Application Lifecycle Management (ALM)1 offering for the Microsoft .NET Framework.

“We are bringing agile design and modeling to the desktop and are offering capabilities that were previously unavailable,” commented Tony de la Lama, vice president and general manager of Together Solutions at Borland. “Our technology and approach to modeling is already widely recognized for reducing the complexities of application design and collaboration in the enterprise Java” space. There has been broad interest for a similar offering to exist for the Microsoft .NET Framework and we are delighted to comply.”

According to analyst research firm Gartner Group 2, the Microsoft .NET Framework is gaining broad traction in next generation e-business solutions such as Web, mobile and consumer facing applications. The Microsoft .NET Framework is especially important in enterprises that have heavy investments and commitments to Microsoft technologies and products. Together Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET helps facilitate the adoption of the Microsoft .NET Framework by offering these organizations a holistic ‘big picture’ view of their applications during development to help avoid disparity between business needs and resulting software.

“Together Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET offers advanced design and modeling capabilities for Visual Studio .NET 2003,” added Marie Huwe, general manager for the Developer and Platform Evangelism Division at Microsoft Corp. “Together Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET delivers a compelling modeling environment for enterprise customers focused on productivity, quality, software asset reuse and team collaboration.”

Borland LiveSource Technology

Borland LiveSource technology helps to keep models and code synchronized. Changes made to models are simultaneously replicated in code and vice versa, ensuring that systems architects and developers are closely aligned in the development process reducing the costs associated with software rework. This approach replaces traditional round-trip engineering methods, which typically result in models and code being out of synch when changes are made.

Together Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Features

Other key features of Together Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET include:

  • Automated documentation to assist team collaboration in the development process
  • Extensive accelerated pattern support, designed to kick-start the development process by providing application blueprints that enable the reuse of existing software assets to help reduce software development costs. Together Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET also allows organizations to create and modify their own patterns
  • The design and modeling environment, was developed in native C#, and offers 100% managed code to ensure deep integration with Visual Studio .NET and the Microsoft .NET Framework
  • Moreover, to help reduce the learning curve for Microsoft developers, the user-interface is consistent with Visual Studio .NET.
