According to a recent study by IDC, 2010 will bring growth and change to the IT and telecommunications industries. The study’s top ten predictions for the year:

  1. Growth will return to the IT industry, as spending levels increase by 3.2%.
  2. Telecommunications spending will increase by 3%.
  3. More than half the IT industry growth will be in emerging markets led by China, India, Brazil and Russia. Growth in mature economies will be more modest, with the US market expanding by 3%.
  4. Cloud computing will expand and mature, bringing new opportunities and heated competition. In 2010, “enterprise grade” cloud services will emerge.
  5. Mobile devices will begin to eclipse PCs as strategic platforms for developers, with over 1 billion accessing the Internet. Android and iPhone apps will multiply. Apple’s iPad will arrive.
  6. Public networks will continue moving to fiber and 3G and 4G wireless.
  7. Business applications will incorporate social/collaboration software and analytics to form a new generation of “socialytic” apps.
  8. Demand for green/sustainable technology will bring new pressures and opportunities.
  9. As other industries recover, they will look to IT to help them adapt. Look for more smart meters and electronic medical records.
  10. The IT industry’s transformations will drive a flurry of mergers and acquisitions. Companies expected to expand their footprint in 2010 include Dell, Oracle, IBM and Canon.
