Wages for Java pros are among the highest in IT, according to dice.com, EarthWeb's online job board for IT professionals. This group made an average salary of $83,000 per year in December 2000, and an average contract rate of $73 per hour.

Silicon Valley has the most demand for Java skills among metro areas, with 21% of all job listings. The tech haven south of the Bay also boasts the highest contract rate offerings in the nation, at an average $99 per hour. Along with the highest demand, the place to be salaried is Silicon Valley, where Java pros are being offered $98,000 per year on average.
