Three of the most well-known universities in the U.S. are now offering online data science programs, but the structure of the programs differs widely:

  • Johns Hopkins University is offering a nine-course program that centers on learning the R programming language. You can take the courses for free, but if you want to earn a specialization certificate, you’ll need to pay a $490 fee.
  • UC Berkeley is offering a master’s degree in data science that requires regular admission to the university and hefty tuition fees. It also covers R, as well as MapReduce and Spark.
  • MIT is offering a course called “Tackling the Challenges of Big Data,” which costs $545 and comes with a certificate of completion. It covers case studies, data capture, storage design, MapReduce, Spark, security, parallelism, analytics and visualization.

InfoWorld‘s Andrew C. Oliver writes that the jury is out on whether or not any of these courses would be helpful to a developer’s career. Experience counts for a lot when looking for a new job, but for developers looking to move into the data science field, one of this programs might help.
