When Congress was considering the America Invents Act in 2011, many of the largest software developers in the country supported the bill. They argued in favor of loosening patent restrictions and making it tougher for patent “trolls” to collect damages. Now, some in Washington want to go a step farther and are calling for the elimination of software patents altogether, but those same companies are now arguing against further legislation.
Representatives from Oracle, Microsoft, IBM and other firms met with Congressional staffers. In a briefing they urged legislators to improve the quality of patents rather than eliminating the system. “As my grandmother used to say, you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water,” said Oracle’s Dorian Daley.
