Snapchat has just unveiled its first hardware product—a wearable called Spectacles. Somewhat similar to Google Glass, the device looks like a pair of sunglasses and can take up to 10 seconds of video at a time. Unlike most other cameras, the device records video with a circular shape, and it has a 115-degree-angle lens. It will cost $129.99, and a limited number will be available for sale later this fall.

The company has also announced that it is changing its name to Snap.

So why should mobile development pros be interested? The Spectacles don’t currently have a way for developers to create apps; they will only work with Snapchat. However, the idea that an app-maker might be able to create a hardware product that works only with one particular app is interesting. Also, if the device takes off, it could create more interest in wearables in general.
