Sometime between July and September, Samsung will begin selling the Samsung Z, the world’s first smartphone powered by the Tizen operating system. Analysts say the move could help Samsung distance itself from Google. “It enables Samsung to hedge its bets much better compared to some of its rivals,” said Frost & Sullivan consultant Andrew Milroy. “However, it is unlikely to make a significant dent on the Android market share.”

If Tizen-based phones are going to take off, Samsung will have to build a solid developer community that offers plenty of apps to users. It may help that Tizen can run apps written in HTML5. In addition, to “encourage more developers to join, the Tizen Store would provide a special promotional program to all developers for one year,” Samsung said.

Initially, the Samsung Z will be available only in Russia.
