Report: Security Risks Found in 83% of Top Apps

Mobile risk management vendor Appthority has released a new report that sounds the alarm about security risks in mobile apps. The company said that 83 percent of the 400 apps analyzed had security risks. Free apps were much more likely to engage in “risky” behaviors such as tracking a user’s location (72 percent). “It’s clear that developers have seen the value that may come from collecting user data (and in many cases, selling that data) regardless of whether users have paid for an app or not,” wrote Appthority.

The report highlights the need for mobile development firms to be cautious about collecting only data they really need. Otherwise, they may find their apps blocked from devices that regularly connect to corporate networks.
