A new NPD report on laptop sales finds that purchases of Chromebooks have increased substantially. “Chromebook sales within the U.S. Commercial Channel increased 250 percent year-over-year and accounted for 35 percent of all channel notebooks sales,” stated the report.

Education institutions seem to be responsible for buying many of the low-cost devices which run Chrome OS. Google reported that schools bought 1 million Chromebooks last quarter. In addition, Dell stopped selling Chromebooks to anyone but education customers because it cannot keep up with demand.

In related news, Google is revamping the Chrome OS interface to make it more like Android. However, the update is still in the very early stages and isn’t available to developers to yet.
