The advisors at RedMonk have updated their semiannual list of the most popular programming languages, and this time Java and JavaScript are tied for the top spot. The rest of the top ten included PHP, Python, C#, C++ and Ruby (both in sixth place), CSS, C and Objective-C.

Apple’s Swift, which was introduced June 2, placed 68th. “Depending on your perspective, this is either low for a language this significant or impressive for a language that is a few weeks old,” said RedMonk analyst Stephen O’Grady. “Either way, it seems clear that — whatever its technical issues and limitations — Swift is a language that is going to be a lot more popular and very soon.”

The R language was a big climber, going from 18th to 13th, and Google’s Go rose from 22nd to 21st.

Several different organizations calculate programming language popularity using different methodologies. RedMonk bases its list on GitHub repositories and Stack Overflow mentions.
