OwnCloud Closes; Founder Launches Nextcloud

OwnCloud, an open source Dropbox replacement, is shutting down its U.S. operations after a tumultuous week that saw its founder fork his own project.

Founded in 2010, ownCloud offered consumers an open source cloud storage alternative, and in 2014, the company raised $10.1 million. But in April of this year, ownCloud founder Frank Karlitschek announced he was leaving the company. On May 31, ownCloud announced that it was setting up a foundation to increase transparency and address community concerns. The next day, Karlitschek said he was forking the project and setting up a new company called Nextcloud. One day later (June 2), ownCloud laid off all of its U.S. staff; ownCloud operations are still running in Germany.

Karlitschek says he has funding from a Red Hat co-founder, and he promises, "It will be possible to upgrade ownCloud to the Nextcloud, and we will try to support this as long as possible. Of course, it is hard to say what happens in the future, but we want to make this as easy as possible for users."
