The latest U.S. Digital Consumer Report from Nielsen is full of good news for the mobile development industry—and some bad news for television. According to the researchers, 65 percent of Americans now own smartphones. That’s more than the number who have game consoles (46 percent) or digital cable (54 percent). Tablet ownership is also on the rise; 29 percent of Americans now own a tablet, up from 5 percent in 2011.

Americans are spending more time with their smartphones and tablets. They now spend an average of 34 hours, 17 minutes using mobile browsers and apps each month, an increase of 9:52. People still watch more television—133 hours, 49 minutes per month—but that’s a decrease of 2:44 since the last report.
