New Ruby on Rails Release Boosts App Performance

David Heinemeier Hansson has released Ruby on Rails 3.1, and the open source Web application framework offers several features that boost Web app performance. For example, it uses Sprockets technology to execute JavaScript more quickly. In addition, it includes HTTP Streaming, which "means a page that feels significantly faster because it's ready to use by the user sooner," said Hansson. And another feature called "Identity Map" improves caching for even greater speed.

The release also now uses jQuery as the default JavaScript library instead of Prototype.
