Yukihiro Matsumoto, founder of the popular scripting language Ruby, has a new project: mruby, a version of Ruby for embedded applications. Matsumoto says mruby will compete with Java and C, but he believes mruby is superior to Java for embedded applications.

Mruby is still in the alpha stage of development, but there’s already a bridge that makes it possible to write iPhone apps in it.

As for the main version of Ruby, Matsumoto doesn’t see a lot of need for change. Ruby 2.0 was released in February, and upcoming scheduled releases will have only minor improvements.
