The Mozilla Foundation has announced that it is working on a new engine for its Firefox browser. Called Quantum, the new project aims to deliver a smoother experience when users are interacting with Web apps. It will build on the organization’s existing Gecko engine as well as leveraging its work on the Servo and Rust projects.

“We’ll be re-engineering foundational building blocks, like how we apply CSS styles, how we execute DOM operations and how we render graphics to your screen,” said David Bryant, head of platform engineering at Mozilla.

Mozilla hopes to start testing the first version of Quantum internally before the end of the year.
