Mobile Development Firms Join Games for Change Movement

For some time, the Games for Change movement has been encouraging PC and console game developers to be more socially conscious, and now mobile development firms are getting involved as well. For example, Sidekick Cycle is a typical side-scrolling bike racing game for mobile devices that donates some proceeds to World Bicycle Relief, which provides bicycles to impoverished communities. Another example, Half the Sky, requires players to complete quests that teach them about the real-life challenges faced by women and girls around the world.

At a recent industry conference, Jean-Michel Blottiere, the co-president of Games For Change's European operation, told attendees, "As a developer, when you start with games you don't think about all of this; you think about making something fun." He continued, "When you grow up and have kids, you see kids playing and start to realize all that information that comes into to their brains, and you start thinking that maybe it should not be so superficial. 'How can I engage them to think about certain subjects that they don't think about every day? What's something they can really feel from the start? How can we achieve even more?'"
