Initially launched as a game controller, Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing input device could soon be used for more serious applications. The company plans to roll out a commercial version of the Kinect SDK early next year. Already, academic institutions and researchers have designed a variety of uses for the motion sensor, ranging from robot vacuum cleaners to location-aware toy helicopters. With the launch of the commercial SDK, observers expect the development of many new uses for the device.

“I can guarantee you that 12 months from now, educational, academic and commercial applications will look nothing like what they are today,” said Microsoft’s Alex Kipman.
