Microsoft has officially released Windows 8.1 to generally positive reviews. Many critics and industry analysts say the update fixes some of the most troublesome aspects of the Windows 8 by bringing back a version of the start button and allowing desktop users to bypass the live tile Start screen.

If enterprises and consumers share this optimistic assessment, it could mean a lot of people will be using the operating system. Developers may want to consider optimizing their apps for 8.1, or even releasing apps for the Windows Store for the first time, to capture some of this market.

One improvement in the new OS will be of particular interest to developers: users now have the ability to select their default applications. That could mean more usage for certain kinds of applications.
