Microsoft has announced that it has purchased Revolution Analytics, a company that makes software for working with the programming language R. The open source language is very popular with data scientists and developers involved in big data projects.

Wikibon analyst Jeff Kelly said that the purchase “gives Microsoft immediate credibility with the upcoming generation of data scientists, most of who look to R as the go-to tool for writing modern statistical analysis packages.”

Joseph Sirosh, a Microsoft corporate vice president, said that the company hopes to integrate R tools with its Hadoop cloud computing services available on Azure.
