MapQuest Trying to 'Out Open' Google
MapQuest has lost a tremendous amount of marketshare to Google over the past few years, but now the AOL-owned company has launched a new initiative called OpenStreetMaps that they hope can bring the company back to the top.
The mapping data are free and open source for anyone to use and contribute to as well. Unlike Google Maps, which is more of a walled city than an open playground, OpenStreetMaps data are free with a capital F.
"We would like to 'out-open' Google," MapQuest general manager Christian Dwyer told the Associated Press.
