Managing Quirky Developers
Datamation's Eric Spiegel writes, "I'm willing to bet that many future developers could have been spotted in their teenage years. They typically would stand out from the crowd. Way out, probably." When these guys grow up, they continue to stand out on applications development teams. While some teams embrace these "odd ducks" because they write brilliant code, others mock those they can't understand.
Spiegel advises, "I think as a team manager of developers it is critical to find ways to maximize this creativity and make sure the odd developers have the opportunity to shine. Be vigilante for any bullying or ostracizing going on within the team and find ways to build team cohesiveness." However, he also cautions that odd developers shouldn't be allowed to distract the team and says that instituting some basic rules can help everyone on the team get along.
