According to the Tiobe Index, the eight most popular programming languages in December 2013 are exactly the same as the eight most popular programming languages in December 2012. They are C, Java, Objective-C, C++, C#, PHP, (Visual) Basic, and Python, in that order.

Number nine on the Tiobe list is Transact-SQL, one of the languages whose popularity has increased the most during the past year. It’s in the running for Tiobe’s programming language of the year award, as are Visual Basic, JavaScript and F#.

JavaScript is number ten on the Tiobe list, but another ranking system, HubReports, says it’s actually the most popular programming language. The difference is due to the fact that Tiobe bases its rankings on Web searches while HubReports considers GitHub code repositories.
