Social media site LinkedIn is trying a new tactic to recruit software engineers: a programming puzzle. Today, the company is launching a website that features a regex puzzle. Developers who solve the Sudoku-like challenge could be offered a job at LinkedIn, but it’s not a sure thing.

The puzzle is the brainchild of a LinkedIn senior software engineer named Neil Pomerleau. He first set up his own website with the puzzle, attracting more than 5,000 visitors and 600 people who were able to solve the challenge. “A lot of different people solved the puzzle,” Pomerleau said. “Some were just starting out, some were industry vets from the Valley, one person even had a PhD in natural language processing. It resonated with the overall engineering community across the board.”
