Intel Buys Omek Interactive
The momentum for gesture recognition continues to build. Now Intel is expanding its efforts in that arena by purchasing Omek Interactive, a company that makes middleware for allowing gesture-based control of apps. Reports indicate Intel spent between $40 million and $50 million on the purchase.
"The acquisition of Omek Interactive will help increase Intel's capabilities in the delivery of more immersive perceptual computing experiences," said Intel's Guy Grimland.
For Intel, "perceptual computing" means controlling computing devices without touching them. Perceptual computing initiatives played a large role in Intel's last Developer Forum event.
Several other companies are also pursuing voice recognition and gesture control technologies.
