IDC’s latest worldwide IT spending forecast is full of good news for developers. The firm predicts that worldwide IT spending will likely increase 4.5 percent in 2017 and another 4 percent in 2018.

Cloud computing will be a big contributor to those increases as providers add more servers and storage to their data centers. And mobile development could get a boost as smartphone spending increases 7 percent. “Cloud and mobile are still the big drivers for IT spending, despite the attention devoted to new technologies like augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and robotics,” said Stephen Minton, IDC vice president.

Another bright spot: software spending will increase 7 percent for 2017. Key areas like big data and analytics will drive much of that spending.
