During the keynote at the first day of the Google I/O developer conference, the company focused on its big plans for Android. It touted Android Wear, its mobile platform for smartwatches and other wearables, and Android Auto, its mobile platform for vehicles. Most importantly, it announced Android L, a major update that will become available on devices this fall.

The biggest new feature in Android L from a mobile development standpoint is Material Design. It alters the way things look on the screen and the way they respond to touch input to more closely mirror the real world. The release also adds notifications to the lock screen and gives users more ways to unlock their devices. For enterprise users, it will enable separate business and personal modes on one device. Finally, it will integrate more deeply with Chrome, and Chrome OS users will now have access to Android apps.

According to Google, more than 1 billion people are actively using Android devices.
