Google has announced the release of Go 1.7, and the primary benefit of the update is speed. The programming language has a new compiler back-end that improves application performance by 5 to 35 percent, according to Google. In addition, the company says that the updated version also reduces the size of compiled binaries by 20 to 30 percent.

Go 1.7 also adds support for Linux on IBM z Systems. Other changes include vendor directories, a new binary format for exported metadata, better handling of traditional performance analysis tools and support for Fortran source files.
