GitHub has open sourced a text editor it calls “Atom” following a beta trial by more than 150,000 developers. The company calls Atom “a hackable text editor for the 21st century,” and it built the tool with Chromium at its core. “Our goal was also to make something that a beginner could jump into and be productive right away,” explained GitHub developer Nathan Sobo, “and as his or her skills grow, they can change the tool so it can grow with them and go wherever they need to take it. Atom is highly customizable, highly programmable, and super powerful.”

Sobo added, “I’ve always dreamed of a general purpose editor that straddles the line between a plain text editor and an IDE.”

For now, Atom is only available in a Mac version, but Windows and Linux versions are in the works.
