The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has recently uncovered several instances of developers using Facebook APIs to obtain user data that they then sell to law enforcement. In response, Facebook has clarified its policies to note that this sort of surveillance violates its rules.

“Over the past several months we have taken enforcement action against developers who created and marketed tools meant for surveillance, in violation of our existing policies; we want to be sure everyone understands the underlying policy and how to comply,” wrote Facebook’s deputy chief privacy officer Rob Sherman.

The Facebook policy now says developers can’t “use data obtained from us to provide tools that are used for surveillance.”
